A Year of Exhibitions: Our 2024 Highlights

Beyond Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience

One of the biggest immersive art experiences sweeping the nation last year, we had the absolute pleasure of hosting Beyond Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience here at Exhibition Centre Liverpool. And, it was definitely one of our 2024 highlights.

But what was it?

Described as a way to ‘immerse yourself in Van Gogh’s artwork like you’ve never seen it before’, the Beyond Van Gogh experience projects some of his most famous works out of their frames and onto the walls in an innovative, constantly moving display. Using the flow of music and clever syncing, appearing and disappearing of different paintings, this unique experience allowed you to see tiny details in a fully immersive way – bringing new life to his collection of work.

This type of immersive art experience is a fantastic example of how technology and space can meet to create something incredible. To make this 2024 exhibition, we combined a series of projectors and temporary curtain walls to completely transform the hall into a series of spaces for visitors to watch the floor-to-ceiling display.

Attracting loads of attendees, and creating a cultural moment for everyone to enjoy, it’s no surprise that this event was one of our highlights of the year!

Liverpool Comic Con

It was hard to miss when Comic Con hit the streets of Liverpool last year. Packed full of amazingly creative, passionate people, Comic Con is one of our highlights of the year for the sheer brilliance of the attendees (and of course the organisers who work with us to put on this event!).

Here at Exhibition Centre Liverpool, we had the absolute pleasure of hosting Comic Con in both May and November of 2024. And, this last year was definitely a milestone.

With humble beginnings in our exhibition centre, 2024 was the year Comic Con took over the whole campus – including the arena and convention centre – to house amazing presentations, panels, and booths for attendees. This is a sign of incredible growth since their first event, and we’re incredibly proud of being a partner to the success of this event.

Another 2024 highlight for the expansion of Comic Con? We worked closely with Marketing Liverpool and Liverpool One to set up city-wide activities to give a big Liverpool welcome to everyone that attended.

By fully embracing the spirit of Comic Con, both our wonderful city and super In-House Experts are part of making this event one of the highlights of our year.

FIFAe Next Gen

If there’s one thing Liverpool loves, it’s football. Whether you’re a red or a blue, we can all agree that this city is home to an incredible sporting spirit. So, we simply couldn’t put a list of our 2024 highlights together without mentioning the amazing event that was FIFAe Next Gen.

We had the honour, and pleasure, of being chosen to host the first-ever multi-title football eSports event back in the late summer of 2024. This exhibition was the first of its kind, combining several different football eSports titles for the ultimate FIFAe experience designed to bring football and gaming fans together.

As part of the event, twenty managers (each with an assistant manager) competed at the inaugural FIFAe World Cup™ for the chance to win part of the $100,000 prize pot. We also hosted several streams dedicated to all things football – from tactics to Football Manager, and all hosted by Spencer ‘SpencerFC’ Owen. There was also the opportunity for local North West players to compete against some of the world’s best eSport gamers in a massive showcase.

This was an incredible event, merging complex technological requirements with intense in-person set-up, filming, and recording equipment to create something people could enjoy and participate in around the world. The hard work put in by our Production Services teams, and everyone else who was involved in the planning and success of the event is definitely another reason it became one of our 2024 highlights.

Expedition One

At Exhibition Centre Liverpool, and indeed the wider campus, we have a huge focus on Sustainability and making sure our venues are at the forefront of environmentally friendly practices within the events industry. One of our 2024 exhibitions links perfectly with this, and definitely had to make it onto our highlights of the year.

And this event? Expedition One, in partnership with Ecotricity. Launched later in the year, this was the official start to Liverpool’s status as the first Accelerator City; designated by the UN, this initiative is set to explore new ways in which the events industry can become more sustainable for the future. Held in our exhibition hall as part of the Act 1.5 initiative, this was a free event filled with interesting discussions, podcast recordings, and even two immersive art installations.

This event was also yet another way we could use temporary walls to create new spaces within the main hall, allowing for multiple events to happen at once and providing a well-rounded experience for our visitors. To this, we also ensured that all catering at this event was plant-based as part of our wider sustainability strategy.

As far as highlights of the year goes, the recognition of our sustainability efforts, and the opportunity to lead the way within our industry is definitely up there.
